We wish you a empathic 2017.
This is the 11 year in a row we created a video version of our life.
2016 was a rollercoaster year. After we realized that the technical debt of our current home was too big, we decided to build a new one in our garden. We started building that house in 2016. To limit the projects in progress, Yves put most community work in the freezer. We took similar hard decisions on family “duties”. The building of the house goes slower then when we would have been in our twenties, yet we managed to keep our family life rather sane.
This was our life in 2016, we are very interested in yours.
Will you share with us what gave rise to the highest emotions in 2016?
yes, we are serious. Let’s turns this blog post into a nice dialog.
Yves, Els, Joppe, Bent, Geike
Hanoulle – Ryssen
PS After ten years we have a small number of families and teams inspired by our video’s. Will you join us?
We wish you an exceptional 2016. Just like the last 9 years we want to do this using a self made video about our life in 2015.
During our (Yves & Els) life, our group of friends grew and spread over the whole world.
Although we can’t send a personal mail to each and all of you. We do want to bring a personal message.
Newyear is a moment to make personal connections stronger. For some that is with family, for some with physical close friends. For us it does not matter if you live in our village or in Australia.
2015 was a moving year, for the world and for our little family. Yves tried to fuse his life and work even more. (He does not believe in worklife balance, he loves work life fusion. ) so he took Joppe with him to talk in Kiev, Sofia and even Antwerp.
Joppe exceded everyones expectations.
All three kids continued to go to CoderDojo and gradually took more friends with them.
We finished 2015 by launching our own android game (www.anguis.be)
Anguis started as a summer parent pair programming project from Joppe and Yves. Programming one hour every day during our summer holiday. And it grew into a full blown family project. Bent and Geike turned out to be real good testers. (I wonder if bringing Lisa Crispin and Johanna Rothman to our house a few years ago had anything to do with it 😉 )
And grand father Ignace came up with a new algorithm to generate our own letter frequency.
And just yesterday Joppe’s Godfather Wim had an idea that made the ergonomics and UI a lot better.
Does this give you a desire to anguis? (yes in our family it already became a verb) we hope so. www.anguis.be to download the game. (The game itself won’t bug you fro a rating, we hate that just like anyone else, yet we do hope you will give us a rating when you like the game.)
Unfortunately we don’t support English yet. Yes it was designed as a real MVP. In a full lean-startup way we will first add more features gradually grow our audience and once we are happy with the game, we will create a version that lets you choose English words.
Joppe limited the hobbies in progress and gave up his music lessons in favour of his basket.
Bent switch from circus to Rugby.
Geike took the musical aspirations from her brother over.
And is Els keeping this family together.
That was our life. We are also interested in yours.
Please share with us, what are you most proud of from your life in 2015?
Yves, Els, Joppe, Bent, Geike Hanoulle – Ryssen
PS: Every year more people join us in making a video. Will you join us this year?
PPS: The kids might not see all the mails we get as answer, they do regularly look at the videos. so if you want to leave them a message, give it a like or a comment. Thank you
After the strong CoachRetreats year in 2013, Oana and me slowed down a little. That resulted in only 6 CoachRetreats in 2014. The good part for me, is that these happened without any support of me. Self-organisation at it’s best. Now it’s time to find more people to organize CoachRetreats in other cities/countries. A big thank you to Oana and all local organizers for all their work in 2014.
As you can see in this years video, I did a presentation with my 12 year old son at Failing.Forward. it was a real nice experiment, especially as he did not yet have English at school and the conference was in English. The standing ovation he received at the end, told us it was a successful experiment. You can read about it (in Dutch) here
I have stepped 4.730.443 steps this year. That is 5.795 km, or 601 km less than last year, probably due to the fact I did not run this year. I also had two pair of shoes that completely broke down on me. Even when I was living of wellfare, I never had that. I guess the quality of cheap shoes has gone down dramatically… (Sorry Guido, I’m one of these men, who don’t like to spend money on quality shoes..) Or maybe that is because I did 5795 floors, which was 661 more then last year.
This year I found a developer helping me out to relaunch the PairCoaching community site. He has trouble setting up a wiki for the PairCoaching domain. Is there anyone who has experience with a setting up an open wiki, who wants to help out? The PairCoaching community will love you for it.
I started coaching CoderDojo and even took on the role of LeadCoach. My three children joined and two of them have brought in their own friends.
On a personal level, we now have 2 children with a double digit number.
Geike at age 7 already knowing very well what she wants and does not want to do.
Bent going alone to school by bike. Sometimes coming home alone and already studying before we come home.
Joppe going to a bigger school, 7 kilometers by bike with a bunch of friends. What made me most proud was he stayed with a friend who fell on the way to school, risking to be late for a test. Life is all about priorities. He has his priorities right.
The plans for our new home got accepted and although we did lose a lot of time for multiple reasons. We did make a progress and looking forward to see the new house grow this year.
Programmeren voor kinderen: I started to translation of Programming For kids. Ok I’m cheating a little, that book is not finished yet. I will publish the first version this holiday, when I have integrated all the feedback I have already received. A big Thank you to Peter Armstrong from Leanpub for letting me translate this. Another thank you to Johan DeCroppe for reading and fixing my mistakes.
A client where I did a small assignment to help a team split in two, turned into a big assignment. We started a re-organization of a 150 people company. I have now trained 4 feature teams and started a traject with the executive committee. A big thank you to Hans Vranken (CEO) & Nathalie Servranckx (CIO) for trusting me. An even bigger thanks to the teams doing all the hard work, in ever changing circumstances.
We put the PragAuthor.com project in the freezer. I hope to unfreeze it as an open-source project, when my WIP is lower.
Problem Solving Leadership: one of these trainings that has a huge impact, for years to come. Thank you Jerry Weinberg, Johanna Rothman, Esther Derby for such a wonderful experience. Thank you my co-participants for a wonderful week
Dear smaller clients, I did no have much time for you, yet each of you gave me so much energy and idea’s. Thank you.
Personal Coaching session, I’m probably most proud of this work:
A person who returned to his previous job after figuring out, that was better suited.
A few persons who changed jobs
One person moved to another country
One person contacted after every coaching session, the next day. He had already done what he had promised to do by the next session and in most cases, had already gone a few steps further.
Even better are the people, who found a better work-life-balance and because of that, became more productive.
Thanks to my own investment in a walkingdesk, I have stepped + 4.000 KM this year, most of these while working at home. For those who wonder that is +5.500.000 steps. (This also means I worked to much 🙁 )
our marriage was clearly the family event this year.
The song is a 10 year old dialect song. We selected it, because it’s related to our marriage in multiple ways. A lot of it is hard to translate in English and I would like to thank my FB friends: Jan Van Hecke, Frank Louwers, Jurgen De Smet, Hans Warie, Hannah Verbeke, Johan Tré, Peter Verheyen, Thomas Bouve, Robrecht Demurie for helping out.
Happy New year and I hope we meet again next year.
(The picture below is a video click it too launch it)
5 years ago we had lots of trouble selecting a picture that we would use as a X-MAS card. Selecting one picture out of a few thousand was impossible for us.
We decided to turn this problem into a solution and our first video was born.
This year, we have taken 3.500 pictures. Out of these we selected 221. From these only 65 survived the making of the video. For us, 65 pictures is nothing to summarize our year.
For you, we hope it gives a small impression of our live in 2011. Update: As we released this video on the 22 December, we missedan important event of our year.
Yves would like to send some special thanks to everyone who helped with the different projects he started over the years.
PS: all of these project would love to welcome new volunteers
Update: With risk to spoil some of the magic, we selected this song because Bent school selected this song to sing at his first communion. (Which happened this year)
See here a link that inspired our school
